COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — A crash left debris strewn across an intersection and sent four people to the hospital, three with serious injuries, on Tuesday, the Colorado Springs Fire Department said.
The crash happened about 3:20 p.m. at 315 W. Bijou St., near the ramp connecting Interstate 25.
El Paso County Sheriff’s Office deputies heard the accident and were on scene assisting the occupants of the vehicles. One of the vehicles was on fire and a deputy used an extinguisher to put it out.
All four people who were taken to local hospitals are expected to survive.
The Colorado Springs Police Department said the initial investigation shows a Chevrolet Camaro was traveling westbound when it struck a Toyota SUV that was turning left onto the northbound I-25 on-ramp.
Further investigation determined that excessive speed and driving under the influence of a controlled substance were contributing factors to the accident.
The driver of the Camaro, Phillip Jensen, was taken into custody for several traffic-related charges, including vehicular assault.
Both directions of Bijou Street where closed for more than 2 1/2 hours as police investigated.
