DENVER -- Law enforcement across the state will be out in force over the Memorial Day weekend for the next "The Heat Is On" DUI enforcement period.

The Colorado State Patrol, the Colorado Department of Transportation and 78 local enforcement agencies will ramp up patrols from Friday to Tuesday as DUI arrests traditionally rise during the holiday weekend.

"Between 2007 and 2015, there were 67 traffic fatalities on Colorado roads during Memorial Day weekends,” said Darrell Lingk, director of the Office of Transportation Safety at CDOT. “Of those 67 fatalities, an alarming 41 (61 percent) were alcohol related. The need for "The Heat Is On" enforcement periods is clearly evident, particularly over Memorial Day weekend.”

There were 301 arrests made during a five-day enforcement period last year. During a spring DUI enforcement period from April 9 to May 15, there were 1,451 arrests for DUI, with the Aurora Police Department (239), Denver Police Department (216) and Colorado Springs Police Department (135) recording the most.

Also beginning Friday will be Checkpoint Colorado, a 100-day summer enforcement period that will go through Labor Day weekend. Law enforcement agencies will conduct three DUI checkpoints during the enforcement period.

The Denver Police Department will operate DUI checkpoints and impaired driving saturation patrols at various locations throughout the city this weekend. The locations, dates and times are undisclosed.
