WESTMINSTER, Colo. -- Police are investigating an officer-involved shooting that left an armed suspect dead late Wednesday night, the Westminster Police Department said.

The shooting happened just before 10 p.m. in a residential area of the 7300 block of Tennyson Street.

Police said four officers were investigating a stolen vehicle when there was some kind of confrontation with the suspect, who pulled a gun and fired at police.

The officers returned fire and killed the suspect. Police said not all of the four officers fired their weapons.

"I heard a couple of gunshots and then right after, very quickly, another 13, 14, 16 shots fired back," resident David Lucero said.

One officer suffered minor injuries during the confrontation. He was treated at the scene and is going to be OK.

The investigation is still in its early stages, and the 17th Judicial District Critical Incident Investigations Team will be conducting the review of what happened and the use of deadly force by police.
