AURORA, Colo. -- Two people were killed and two others were seriously injured after a head-on collision near Buckley Air Force Base on Saturday, the Aurora Police Department said.

The crash happened just after 8:30 a.m. on East Sixth Avenue between Tower and Picadilly roads. At that part of the road, Sixth Avenue is two lanes.

Police and fire crews found a silver sedan with three occupants and a black SUV with one occupant. One person from the sedan died at the scene, police said. It's unclear in which vehicle the second person who died was in at the time of the crash.

Police said that according to their initial investigation, the sedan was traveling eastbound on Sixth Avenue and might have been passing another eastbound vehicle.

The SUV was traveling in the westbound lane and the two vehicles struck head-on. No children were involved in the crash and police said no criminal activity, drugs or alcohol are involved.

Sixth Avenue was closed until just before 2 p.m.

A YouCaring.com page has been set up for the mother of the driver of the sedan who died. According to the page, she was a single mother who lost her only son.
