DENVER -- Arson investigators were on the scene Friday night after a large fire off Interstate 25 shot smoke and flames into the sky Friday afternoon.

The fire blazed through the entire building of the Rockies Inn, an older vacant motel on the east side of I-25 off East Evans Avenue.

SkyFOX was over the fire and showed the building collapsing on itself, and flames spreading to the Dirty Duck Bar next door.

Evans Avenue was closed in both directions as fire crews fought the blaze. It reopened Friday night.

At least five ladder trucks were present at the fire.

The smoke visibly impacted traffic on I-25 in both directions.

The smoke mostly dissipated by 6 p.m., though firefighters were still working to completely douse the fire.

A spokesman said the entire top floor of the long, two-story building was engulfed in flames when crews arrived. More than 50 firefighters worked to extinguish the flames.

The site was sold last year. Plans called for it to become a self-storage facility. Demolition was scheduled to begin next month.
