DENVER -- Two popular establishments failed this week's Restaurant Report Card.

Brown Palace Ship Tavern

The Brown Palace’s Ship Tavern failed our Restaurant Report Card with 18 critical violations in its last two unannounced inspections.

The downtown Denver restaurant’s violations include fruit flies in the bar, numerous employee drinks stored on food prep areas and next to clean plates and the bartender and the staff did not know where the designated hand sink was located.

Also the February report said, “The ceiling was leaking a brown liquid in the receiving area. Dust was on the ceiling and walls in the baker storage room.”

The Ship Tavern said in a statement: "For 82 years, Ship Tavern has been one of Denver’s finest taverns. We took this report very seriously and immediately took swift action to correct all issues including investing significantly in new equipment and training. The follow-up inspection showed no violations which demonstrates our commitment to continue our long tradition of providing outstanding food and service.”

The Ship Tavern at the Brown Palace is located on 17th Street.

Harman’s Eat & Drink

Harman’s Eat & Drink scored an “F” on our report card with 10 critical violations in its last inspection.

The Cherry Creek restaurant’s violations include potatoes that were not washed, an employee touched the dirty floor while picking up a bottle and then continued cooking, and food handlers could not correctly answer questions about proper hand washing.

The February report also said, “A hanging ‘fruit fly bar pro’ fly pesticide was hanging above a faucet. This type of pesticide is not allowed in the public.

In a statement, Harman’s Eat & Drink said, “All of these issues are small easy fixes that were corrected while our inspector was on site. Our staff will be going through some extra training to get everyone more educated.”

The restaurant is located at 2900 E. Second Ave.

Wing Wagon

The grade “A” goes to Wing Wagon in Conifer for back-to-back perfect inspections. The restaurant has not had a critical violation since 2012. The Wing Wagon is located at 26367 Conifer Road in Conifer. It’s the second time the restaurant has been on our report card. The first perfect score was in December 2013.

How restaurants appear on our Report Card

Restaurant Report Card airs on FOX31 Denver News at 9 p.m. each Friday and features health inspections in the city and county of Denver, Jefferson County, Weld County and restaurants under the jurisdiction of the Tri-County Health Department. The Tri-County Health Department includes Adams, Arapahoe and Douglas counties.

Contact Heidi HemmatAn inspection is a “snapshot” of what is happening during the day and time of the inspection. On any given day, a restaurant could have more or fewer violations than noted in an inspection. Also, at the time of an inspection, violations are recorded and can be corrected prior to the inspector leaving the restaurant. If violations are not corrected, a follow-up inspection is scheduled.

The criteria FOX31 Denver uses to give a restaurant a failing grade includes the evaluation of two unannounced inspections by county health inspectors. A failing restaurant must have five critical violations on their most recent regular inspection and five critical violations on the previous regular inspection. Health inspectors may conduct critical or follow-up inspections, due to the number of critical violations found during a regular inspection. Those inspections may also be considered for our reports. We recognize restaurants with two perfect regular inspections in a row by awarding them an A.
