TRINIDAD, Colo. — A Las Animas County sheriff’s deputy was killed in a rollover crash while on duty in Trinidad late Tuesday morning, the Colorado State Patrol said.

Deputy Travis Russell, 44, was going eastbound on Stonewall Avenue just west of Prospect Street when his vehicle veered into the westbound lanes and hit an unoccupied vehicle. Russell’s 2009 Ford Expedition rolled onto its passenger side.

Emergency crews transported Russell to Mount San Rafael Hospital where he died.

Investigators said Russell was on the job but not responding to a call at the time of the crash. He was wearing his seat belt.
