GREELEY, Colo. -- It has been a month since a Greeley man died in a car accident while driving to see his newborn son at the hospital.

Jorge Serrano, 29, died on Feb. 1 on U.S. 85 near the Colorado-Wyoming border. Around the time of his death, Serrano’s wife, Evaline, gave birth to their second child, Caleb.

“He always cared for us,” Evaline Serrano said.

Jorge and Evaline Serrano had been together for seven years after meeting in Fort Lupton.

“I saw a huge change in him this past year with my pregnancy. It felt like we were more united than ever,” she said.

On the morning of Feb. 1, Evaline called Jorge to let him know she was about to give birth. Jorge was in Cheyenne, Wyo., working at a Wal-Mart distribution center.

The moment he found out, Jorge got in his vehicle and drove south to Greeley.

That same day, a nasty snowstorm moved into the area, making driving conditions difficult.

According to the Colorado State Patrol, Serrano was driving fast and lost control of his vehicle. He slammed into a semitrailer and died at the scene.

“It has been very difficult,” Evaline Serrano said.

One month later, Evaline Serrano is still trying to understand “Why.” Every time she looks at little Caleb, she says she sees Jorge.

“When Caleb grows up, what are you going to tell him about his dad?” she asked “[That] he wanted to be there to see him. But because of the weather he wasn’t able to be there with us.”
