DENVER -- A female police officer was shot while on duty Monday afternoon and a suspect was fatally shot, the Denver Police Department said.

She and another officer were responding to a report of a robbery in progress near the intersection of West 37th Avenue and Grove Street just before 1:30 p.m.

One suspect was taken into custody, but the second suspect took off on foot. Officers chased him to West Lowell Boulevard and West Montcrieff Place, where they exchanged gunfire.

Police said one of the officers was shot in the lower left leg. The injured officer, who has not yet been identified, is in fair condition at Denver Health Medical Center.

The suspect then allegedly carjacked a woman and drove up Lowell Boulevard before losing control and getting blocked in by officers near West 35th Avenue and Lowell.

"I look up and you can see this man. It looked like really large pistol and had a nozzle to it," a witness said. "The way I saw him, he was just shooting, his hand was going in different directions."

That's when more shooting took place, and the suspect was shot and killed by an officer. In video obtained by FOX31 Denver, the officer is seen walking away from the scene, wiping a tear.

Another person in the video could be heard yelling, "You killed my brother."

Lowell Boulevard between 32nd and 37th avenues was closed during the investigation.
