WESTMINSTER, Colo. -- A driver died early Thursday morning in a crash that involved a Westminster police vehicle.

The crash happened about 1:10 a.m. at Federal Boulevard and West 88th Avenue, the Westminster Police Department said.

Police said an officer was traveling southbound on Federal while responding to an emergency call of a disturbance with weapons, possibly involving a gun, in the 8400 block of Federal Boulevard. Police said the driver of a sedan attempted to turn left onto 88th when the vehicles collided.

The man driving the sedan was pronounced dead at the scene. His name and age have not been released. The officer, who has not been identified, was taken to a hospital with minor injuries.

A witness said the police vehicle had its emergency lights and siren on when it collided with the sedan, and police said a preliminary investigation by the North Metro Accident Investigation Team confirms that.

Federal Boulevard was closed in both directions between 86th and 90th avenues for about five hours as crews investigated cleaned up the crash. Northbound lanes reopened about 6:15 a.m. and southbound lanes opened just before 7 a.m.
