DENVER -- The New Year might have you considering a new career path. A survey shows 45 percent of Americans plan to look for a new job in 2016.

A list of the best jobs this year comes courtesy of Glassdoor, a jobs and recruiting site.

The report reveals the top 25 jobs in America based on earning potential, career opportunities and number of openings.

But we also look at which of those jobs are available in the Mile High City.

The Auraria Campus is fertile soil for growing our future labor market.

"I am a freshman, actually. I am studying early childhood education,” said Ralph Williamson, 55.

He’s going back to school for a new career as a teacher. But you won't find “teachers” on the new list of Best Jobs in America for 2016. Instead, data scientist tops the list.

"They have computer systems that create reams of data that just sit there silently. So data analysts will go through that data and translate it into meaningful information that managers can use to make decisions to better serve their customer," said Jeff Helton, assistant professor of Health Care Management at Metro State University Denver.

Helton said the need for health care analysis is especially big in Colorado, with 200 jobs available on any given day, and they start at more than $100,000.

Seventh on the list is physician assistant, and nurse practitioner is at No. 23. Both start at nearly $100,000.

"There’s a growing need for those skills. We have lot more people getting old, that need health care, and they don't always need a physician," he said.

Helton said consulting jobs at No. 21 will also remain hot in Colorado as more companies outsource work.

"I know teaching does not pay very well. But I really do want to do it," Williamson said.

He said it's not about the money, but helping especially disadvantaged youth.

"That's why I want to push education so that they know they do have a better opportunity to be what they want to be,” he said.
