DENVER -- No one was injured after a Denver Public Schools bus carrying about a dozen students went off the road and onto a bike path Tuesday morning, the Denver Police Department said.

The incident happened near the Cielo Apartments at East Union Avenue and South Newport Street in the Denver Tech Center.

Police said the bus driver was driving a route for the first time and thought she was on the drive path but instead was on a bike path.

When she realized she was not where she was supposed to be, she tried to back up, then slid into a tree.

Students were left on the bus because they were not in any danger. Another bus picked up the students and took them to school.

Police said the driver will be issued a citation.
