Man charged with first-degree murder in Christmas Eve shooting

ADAMS COUNTY, Colo. — A man has been charged by the 17th Judicial District Attorney’s Office in a shooting that killed one on Christmas Eve.

On Dec. 24, Adam County deputies responding to a 911 call found John Dunnigan, 42, with multiple gunshot wounds on the floor of a home at 2780 West 56th Avenue in unincorporated Adams County. He was transported to Denver Health, where he was pronounced dead.

Wernsman, 23, of Aurora, is charged with one count of first-degree murder after deliberation, one count of first-degree felony murder and one count of first-degree burglary with the intent to commit assault.

He was advised of the charges Wednesday in Adams County District Court. His preliminary hearing is set for 9 a.m. on Mar. 18.
