National Apprentice Week can lead to jobs for many

DENVER -- By 2023, Colorado is expected to add 60,000 new construction jobs. With Colorado and Arizona being the top two states for construction, that also means there is a huge need for skilled trade workers.

“In the early 2000s, we began our own apprentice program because it was getting hard to find workers,” said John Martin with Heating and Plumbing Engineers, a full-service mechanical commercial contractor with offices in Denver and Colorado Springs.

“Our program follows a college semester schedule, a four-year program where they learn in the classroom and get on-the-job training as well. When they graduate as Journeymen, they will have no debt, money in the bank and marketable skills to help them find a good-paying job. Plus they will be filling needs for Colorado companies looking for skilled labor.”

Students get schooling and pay at the same time, and when they graduate, HPE hopes to retain them as long term employees. The apprentice program is certified through the Office of Apprenticeship Training through the Department of Labor.
