DENVER -- A construction worker was injured after a crane collapsed onto the side of a building north of downtown on Wednesday morning, the Denver Fire Department said.

The incident happened at The Source, an artisan food market, at 3330 Brighton Blvd., in the River North District, about 8:45 a.m. Employees in restaurants and shops escaped injury inside the converted 1880s iron works building.

"It sounded like an earthquake. The whole building was shaking violently. There was stuff falling on people's desks. It was pretty crazy," Chris Browning said.

Caroline Glover also works at The Source. "We went back and looked and saw a hole and then the fire department came in and evacuated."

Investigators from OSHA were on the scene of the accident all day going over the crane's wreckage.

Two other cranes will have to be brought in to remove the one that collapsed. Rocky Mountain Structures operated the crane. It punched a hole in the empty rear of the building.

Building inspectors and fire crews had a preliminary cause by mid-morning Wednesday. "A void space underneath the crane that was at work gave way and sent the crane on top of a parking garage," Denver Fire Department spokeswoman Melissa Taylor said.

The crane operator was not hurt in the overturned equipment. But one construction worker on the roof did go to the hospital for treatment of minor injuries.

The damaged parking garage will service The Source, which is doubling its size. Brinkman construction is also building a 100-room hotel on the site. "That building it's really an incredible structure and it took a hit but obviously it's still ticking," The Source general manager Justin Croft said.

There was no structural support damage to the 135-year-old building.

Northbound Brighton Boulevard was closed at 31st Street before one lane was reopened. Southbound Brighton was open, though traffic was moving slowly.
