GREELEY, Colo. — A Greeley Central High School student was arrested Wednesday morning after a gun and ammunition were found in his backpack, the Greeley Police Department said.

The senior was not identified and he was taken to a youth detention facility, police spokesman Joe Tymkowych said.

Tymkowych said the boy was with other students when administrators confronted them on reports they were smoking marijuana.

Following protocol, administrators emptied the senior’s backpack and found the .38-caliber handgun.

The gun was not loaded and administrators do not believe there was any intention of using it on the campus. The boy had not previously displayed any signs of problems at the school or had a history of problems.
