I-225 to close fully overnight at Florida Avenue for construction of a pedestrian bridge.

AURORA, Colo. — Delays on the pedestrian bridge construction on Interstate 225 caused by overnight storms resulted in a continued closure of the highway on Sunday.

I-225 was closed fully overnight on Friday and Saturday nights, but overnight storms and lightning on Saturday caused the highway to remain closed, according to RTD.

The closure is between Parker Road and Mississippi Avenue. The Colorado Department of Transportation originally said the highway would open at 11:30 a.m., but then said that the highway would not reopen until 1:30 p.m.

The northbound lanes for I-225 were reopened at 1:15 p.m. The highway reopened fully at 1:30 p.m.

The pedestrian bridge will be constructed at Florida Avenue and I-225.

According to a news release from RTD, work on the bridge will require additional closures in the future.

The construction is part of the 10.5 mile Aurora Line/I-225 Rail project which will extend light rail service through Aurora and to Denver International Airport. The Aurora Line will open in 2016.
