DENVER -- As parents are getting their kids ready for the first day of school, filling up those backpacks and buying new school clothes has them feeling a bit strapped for cash.

Registration and more items on the supply list have some parents dreading the first bell. In severe cases of financial hardship, exceptions can be made.

As parents and drivers head out Monday, a word of caution: Slow down. There will be back-to-school traffic and enforcement patrols in the school zones, not to mention students walking to school.

Additionally, there will be a lot of first-time high school drivers behind the wheel heading to class.
