COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — A suspect in the back of an El Paso County Sheriff’s deputy’s patrol car pulled out a gun and shot himself after a lengthy standoff Tuesday afternoon and later died..

The incident happened in the area of Powers Boulevard and Aeroplaza Drive. The deputy was not hurt.

Negotiators tried to talk the suspect into surrendering and two SWAT teams were called to the scene.

KRDO reported deputies said they searched the man before placing him in the patrol car to take him to jail, but they did not find a gun that he had on him.

The 33-year-old man was originally arrested on drug charges. He either slipped out of the handcuffs or got his hands in front of him with handcuffs still on.
