Missing toddler, mother found safe in Grand Junction

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. — A toddler and his mother who were reported missing from Mesa County over the weekend have been found safe, the Mesa County Sheriff’s Office said Monday.

Shannon Kunkel, 34, and her 18-month-old son Luke Kunkel Jr. had not been seen or heard from since Saturday. The sheriff’s office said the two were found safe in Grand Junction.

Investigators were traveling to Grand Junction to meet with them.

Shannon Kunkel’s parents woke up about 5:30 a.m. Saturday to a note from her saying she was “going into town.”

Shannon Kunkel was last seen in a dark blue 1992 Toyota Camry in Palisade.

Authorities said Shannon Kunkel has medical issues that made the disappearance “alarming.”
