DENVER -- A man was run over and killed during an early-morning attempted car robbery Friday, the Denver Police Department said.

The incident happened at West Alameda Avenue and South Hazel Court, just west of Federal Boulevard, about 4 a.m.

A Denver medical examiner identified the victim on Monday as  William Romo-Rodriquez from Denver.  He was involved in this accident a day after is 41st birthday.

Police said a man was arriving at an auto repair shop when he saw someone attempt to steal a black Volvo SUV out of the shop's lot. The man, either the owner or a worker of the repair shop, saw the suspect take off in the vehicle.

Romo-Rodriquez chased after the SUV and jumped in front of the vehicle, then tried to get the suspect out. He then was either hit or dragged by the SUV.

The suspect then fled the scene on foot. Romo-Rodriquez was transported to a local hospital where he later died.

Police were searching the area for the suspect, but no description was released. A K-9 unit was brought in to aid the search but it did not turn up the suspect.
