A woman was cited for child abuse after allegedly leaving her three children in a hot vehicle while she was at a nearby salon tanning, the Colorado Springs Police Department said on Tuesday, June 2, 2015.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — A mother in Colorado Springs was cited for child abuse Tuesday after she left her three children in a vehicle with the windows only slightly open as she was getting a tan at a nearby salon, the Colorado Springs Police Department said.

With temperatures outside reaching into the 80s, police said they received a report of the three children in the vehicle of a parking lot in the 4300 block of Austin Bluffs Parkway.

Police said the doors of the vehicle were unlocked and the windows were only down 2 or 3 inches. The children were ages 2, 9 and 10.

“She was tanning at the salon, and her kids were boiling up in an SUV,” a woman who works at a nearby business told KRDO. “It’s really hot today so it was awful to see that.”

The woman said the police officer acted swiftly.

“He literally parked the car and jumped out. The cop car was still jerking when he jumped out because he was frantic too,” the woman said.

The identity of the mother was not released.
