DENVER -- Two men were arrested early Monday morning after allegedly trying to run over a police officer on the Auraria campus, then leading police on a short chase that ended in a crash, the Denver Police Department said.

The driver of a white Chevrolet Cavalier crashed on West Eighth Avenue and Wyandot Street about 3:45 a.m. The intersection was closed for awhile but was reopened before 5:30 a.m.

Police said the men were seen possibly trespassing on the Auraria campus when a police officer approached them. The men then apparently tried to run over the officer before taking off, police said.

Denver police tried to pull over the driver at Eighth Avenue and Decatur Street, but the driver continued driving at a high rate of speed before losing control and crashing at Eighth and Wyandot.

Police say the driver resisted arrest and threatened to shoot officers, and when he reportedly reached into his coat pocket, officers used a foam pellet gun to subdue the suspect and take him into custody.

Police said the passenger in the vehicle took off on foot but was subdued with a stun gun.
