SACRAMENTO, Calif. — A woman found laying in the street at 4:15 a.m. told police a man attacked her with a mace. Not the chemical spray — the medieval weapon with a spiked ball.

A sheriff’s deputy came upon the woman early Monday, according to the Sacramento Bee. She said that she was carrying her dog from her home to her boyfriend’s residence when a man wielding a mace struck her in the head and threatened to kill her, according to FOX40 Sacramento.

The woman, in her 50s, was hospitalized with serious injuries. Travis Lanning, 34, was arrested on charges of assault with a deadly weapon.

Initial reports that the dog had been killed proved to be false: The chubby dachshund mix was later found alive. The dog seems to be sore but okay, reporters at the scene said.
