DENVER -- It wasn`t warm, but after a week of snow and frigid temps, the sun was a welcome sight in Wash Park.

“Weekends are for walking and this is perfect,” said Don Chatfield pet owner.

The walks have been rare for Don Chatfield and his dog Doogie this week he`s been a bit more like a cat during the cold snap.

“We let them out the back door and two minutes later they`re right back in the house,” Chatfield said.

Unfortunately, not all pets have been so fortunate, according to Denver Animal Control, there have been 55 calls for welfare checks on cold pets since Sunday.

“They want to get exercise just as bad as we do but, as a good rule of thumb, if you don`t want to be outside for a long time, your pet shouldn't be outside for a long time either,” said Dan Taylor, an Emergency Veterinarian.

Dan Taylor often treats animals left out in the cold, and he says most often, owners simply have a false sense that their animals are made to be out in these conditions.

“That`s really a myth. They`re at risk of cold related illness just as much as we are,” said Taylor.

Doggie Vests aren't just a fashion statement on days like this, especially for short haired dogs and those battling illnesses.

Even those dog booties can play an important role.

“It`s not fun for her she can`t run,” said Fatima Otero, dog owner.

Fatima Otero’s dog Layla developed sores on the bottom of her paws and she learned the ice and salt mixes on the road were to blame.

“We already had her for six years and we didn't think she would get so hurt on the bottom of her paws,” said Otero.

That`s why the booties are here to stay  as long as the cold continues.

“She's walking weird right now, but I think she'll get to it,” said Otero.
