\WESTMINSTER, Colo. -- Salvador Fierro, the 12-year-old boy who went missing in Westminster on Tuesday afternoon, was found safe at a friend's home Wednesday morning, the Westminster Police Department said.
Salvador left his home about 2:30 p.m. Tuesday to walk to a friend's home in the 11500 block of Pecos Street, but he didn't get there and did not return home later Tuesday.
He was last seen at his family's home in the 11700 block of Decatur Street. Around 11:30 p.m., Salvador's mother called police and reported him missing.
Police said about 11:30 a.m. Wednesday they found Salvador safe at a friend's home at West 113th Avenue and Pecos Street.
An extensive search for Salvador between his home and the friend's home about 2 miles away in the area of The Ranch County Club was expanded Wednesday morning to include a Denver Police Department helicopter.
There was concern for the boy because of the bitter cold temperatures that gripped the Denver metro area. Highs hovered around 0 degrees all day Tuesday and plunged below zero overnight Tuesday, and several inches of snow covered the ground from two recent snow storms.
The area between Salvador's home and his friend's house included a golf course and Jackson Lake.
A Code Red notification initially was sent to 171 residents in the area of West 115th Avenue and Pecos Street.
Another Code Red alert was sent Wednesday morning around 9:30 a.m. to the expanded area, which is from the 11200 block to the 12000 block between Federal Boulevard and Huron Street.
