ANAHEIM, Calif. — The reunion of troops who have been overseas with their families at sporting events has become commonplace. But Wednesday night, the Anaheim Ducks took it to another level.

During a break in the game between the Ducks and Edmonton Oilers at the Honda Center, Sgt. First Class Robert Vandenberg Jr. was “supposedly” in Romania and Skyping on the Jumbotron with his family.

He was on his way home for the holidays after a one-year deployment in Afghanistan. But the “feed” went out before he could talk with his wife, Patricia, their 1-year-old son Robert and newborn Travis.

But Vandenberg was actually in the arena, and shortly after he walked out to the surprise of the family and those in attendance.
