DeSOTO, Texas — A 73-year-old widow lives alone in her Texas home and is recovering from knee and back surgeries. DeSoto Police Officer John Holder went to Dorothy Shepard’s home on a wellness check.

“She struck me as someone that really needed someone to care and help her out,” Holder told WFAA.

The officer gave Shepard his cellphone number and told her if she needed anything to call him.

And she has.

For the past six months, Holder has driven Shepard to and from every doctor’s appointment when he’s off-duty.

“I know police officers, but I never expected him to be that kind, and to go out of their way,” Shepard said. “He’s just tremendous.”

Holder never told his bosses what he was doing, but in late November, a citizen snapped a photo of Holder helping Shepard buy Thanksgiving dinner.
