AMES, Iowa – A National Guard Sergeant deployed to the Middle East watched the birth of his second child via iPad. Then, he got the unexpected chance to join his family in person less than a day later.

Sgt. John Vorrath was thousands of miles away for the birth of his daughter, Charlotte, watching on his iPad. But as he watched, his commander slipped him a secret note saying his request for leave had been granted, WHNT reported.

Vorrath’s wife still had no idea. So Vorrath secretly got on a plane and walked into the hospital just 22 hours later to surprise his wife, new daughter and 2-year-old son.
