MANITOU SPRINGS, Colo. — Colorado State Patrol troopers are investigating the death of a carjacking suspect who died during a chase with police Saturday afternoon.

CSP troopers responded to a report of an armed carjacking about 4 p.m. in Manitou Springs, CSP reported. A male suspect had allegedly rammed a local police car as well as two other vehicles in an attempt to flee the town.

Troopers spotted the suspect car, a 1997 Honda Accord, heading west on Highway 24. Troopers tried to stop the suspect, who then reportedly cut onto southbound Highway 67. The suspect ignored officers’ lights and sirens, CSP said.

About four miles later, troopers stopped chasing the suspect out of fear that the winding road could lead to an accident, CSP said.

Teller Couny Sheriff’s deputies deployed spike strips onto the highway a mile further ahead. The Accord apparently struck them with at least two wheels, at which point police tried to stop the suspect again. As troopers neared the Accord, the suspect vehicle veered off the right side of the highway and down an embankment, where it began to roll.

The male suspect, who was identified Sunday as 44-year-old Anthony Aurelio, died in the crash, CSP said.

It was not immediately clear what caused the crash. The incident was under investigation, CSP said.
