GLENDALE, Colo. -- Lots of folks around Denver spent Saturday taking in a bit of sunshine after a few cloudy days. The Glendale Women Raptors were no different. The ladies hosted Friends & Family Day so everyone could learn a bit more about rugby and enjoy the sport. But, the women also pitched in to help out one of their friends; a former Raptors player who was recently diagnosed with a rare form of soft tissue cancer, Synovial Sarcoma.
Player Laura Miller described the rules for a spectator. “So the idea is to get the ball down to the end and get into the end zone which we call the tri zone." It’s a game that’s a bit like soccer and a bit like football. Miller added, “The term touchdown in football actually comes from Rugby because in Rugby you have to physically touch it down.”
The women are fast, fearless and passionate. "It is a family; it is absolutely a family,” said Miller about her teammates and players across the country.
The women of the Glendale Raptors banded together selling drinks and burgers on Saturday to support former teammate and Olympic hopeful; Jillion Potter; as she tackles a big challenge ahead. They’re hoping to cover Jill’s out-of-pocket expenses which could total more than $16,000. Miller said, "Jill is the best rugby player in the country."
Teammate Hannah Stolba; who shaved her head in solidarity with Jill; said, "Jill is one of the kindest, sweetest people I’ve ever known, but she is an absolute force to be reckoned with on the rugby field."
"Jill is the heart of every team she plays for,” Miller said, adding, "Her spirits are really high, the community, the rugby community is a great place to be and were a very supportive nationwide team and we`re just trying to raise awareness and support for her as possible."
Jill is undergoing aggressive chemotherapy following a surgery. All the funds that are raised above $16,400 will be donated to the Sarcoma Foundation of America. Here is a link to the fundraising page: http://www.youcaring.com/medical-fundraiser/support-jillion-potter-s-recovery/241609
