COMMERCE CITY, Colo. -- The family of a dog shot and killed over the weekend is asking for a police investigation into whether or not the shooter went too far.

The dog, Clifford, was killed on Saturday after he was reported to have jumped over a fence and was seen running towards another dog. A man walking his animal shot and killed the dog in what his family claimed was an act of self defense.

"I'm upset, I'm trying to stay calm for my kids, and for my wife," said Raymond Martinez, the owner of the dog killed.

The Martinez family told FOX31 Denver on Monday that their neighbor also pointed a gun at them. The incident remains under investigation but so far no charges have been filed.

The Martinez' say there were a lot of witnesses to what happened because it happened while they were having a birthday party.

"There are two sides to every story, everybody is going to have their version," said Pam Burr, the wife of the man involved in the shooting.
