NEDERLAND, Colo. — A grandfather hiked out of the backcountry in the middle of the night to get help after his grandson fell ill during a backpacking trip, the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office said Monday.

The 14-year-old suffered severe abdominal pain, so the grandfather, Jeff Coors, hiked from King Lake off Rollins Pass Road to Nederland. The sheriff’s office received a call from Coors just before 3 a.m., and a joint rescue team was assembled.

The Rocky Mountain Rescue Group and the Grand County Search and Rescue responded and reached the boy, who was able to hike out of the backcountry about 8:40 a.m.

He was taken to a hospital by Grand County Emergency Medical Services.
