LITTLETON, Colo. --Residents took quick action Monday to save a man from a rapidly growing condominium fire.

It happened around 10 a.m. just off Lowell, near Belleview in Littleton.

Smoke and fire ended up causing heavy damage to four units inside the Cheatux Beaumar complex.

Jerry Peterson saw the whole thing and said, “There were flames coming out, I mean, windows were popping out, flames were going up to the roof. It was horrible.”

Peterson and another neighbor saw the flames and came running. “I was standing out front screaming, ‘Hey is there anybody in there?'” Peterson added, “There’s this old guy and he’s screaming, 'Help! Help!'”

“He was not very coherent at all, he couldn’t move very fast and he just couldn’t get out of there, so we had to help him out,” Peterson said.

Nearly two dozen fire trucks responded and knocked out the fire, but not before it gutted two homes and damaged two others.

Littleton Fire Chief Christopher Armstrong said, “The hard part with multi-family residences especially in the attic space, is that it has a tendency to extend horizontally. Luckily we were able to get a hold of the fire pretty early.”

Fire investigators are still looking into how the fire started but Peterson said,  “He admitted he was smoking in the chair. He tried to put it out and couldn’t because he couldn’t move fast enough.”

That man is expected to be OK. Other residents are getting help from the Red Cross.
