DENVER – Southbound Interstate 25 will be closed Sunday night between Alameda Avenue and U.S. 6 while workers remove structures as part of the I-25 Gap Lane Project, the Colorado Department of Transportation announced.

The closure will last from 10 p.m. until 5 a.m. Monday. The left two lanes of northbound I-25 will also be closed between Alameda and U.S. 6 beginning at 9 p.m.

“We chose these hours on Sunday night because it is the timeframe during which traffic volumes are at their lowest points of the week,” said Kevin Sullivan, CDOT Project Director. “This allows us to minimize inconvenience and maintain the highest possible levels of safety for our crews and the traveling public.”

From 10 p.m. until midnight, southbound I-25 traffic will divert west on U.S. 6 to Federal Boulevard, then south on Federal to 5th Avenue to enter eastbound U.S. 6 and reconnect with southbound I-25.

At midnight, the eastbound 5th Avenue on-ramp to eastbound U.S. 6 will need to close, so at that time southbound Federal drivers will continue to Alameda, then go east on Alameda to reconnect with southbound I-25, CDOT said. Northbound Federal Boulevard drivers will continue to Colfax Avenue to access I-25. Also at midnight, crews will close the eastbound and westbound US 6 on-ramps to southbound I-25.

All lanes will reopen by 5:30 a.m. Monday.

The $98 million U.S. 6 Bridges Design-Build Project will replace six bridges on U.S. 6, improve traffic movements in the I-25 and U.S. 6 interchange and eliminate several traffic weave movements along US 6 between Federal Boulevard and I-25. Project completion is slated for August of 2015.
