DENVER — A soldier from Thornton was killed in a helicopter crash in Afghanistan. Private First Class Jacob Wykstra’s family was told Thursday about his death.

The crash happened in Kandahar Province  Wedneaday.

Wykstra, 21, was based at Fort Carson in Colorado Springs. He grew up in Thornton.

When the military brought the news to the family, neighbors immediately rallied around them.

“Jake and his sister had lived there since they were little kids, got to know them fairly well, great kids, Jake especially was always willing to help around the neighborhood,” says Bill Myers, a neighbor.  “One of the saddest days I can remember when the soldiers showed up yesterday with the news.”

There are now American flags flying in every yard in the neighborhood to honor Wykstra.
