DENVER — Spandex generally isn’t a good look for politicians–for anyone, really–but that’s not inhibiting Mike Kopp, who launching a statewide bike tour this Friday in an effort to connect with voters in every corner of Colorado ahead of next month’s GOP gubernatorial primary.

Kopp, a former state Senate Minority Leader, won top-line on the primary ballot at April’s state GOP assembly but remains an underdog in the party’s four-way gubernatorial primary.

Tom Tancredo, Bob Beauprez and Scott Gessler have all raised more money and have higher name identification with voters than Kopp.

Kopp plans to bicycle 436 miles in all from the Western Slope to Colorado’s eastern plains, making stops in 10 communities, all of them well outside the Denver metro area.

“Our campaign and this tour are about everyday Coloradans who want more freedom and less government,” Kopp said in a statement from his campaign.

“I couldn’t be more energized about the race and our prospects to restore Colorado’s standing than I am today. My promise is to never quit in mounting a rock solid defense of our Constitution. As governor, I will work to assure the legacy we pass down is a legacy of freedom.”

Kopp will hit the road at 9 a.m. in Grand Junction on Friday, head south and west over the Continental Divide at Monarch Pass and end the afternoon of June 4th in Holly in southeast Colorado near the Kansas state line.

Kopp will hold official campaign events in Grand Junction, Delta, Montrose, Gunnison, Salida, Canon City, Pueblo, La Junta, Lama and Holly.

Hopefully Kopp persuades voters that smaller, more competent government is what Colorado needs. He will do a great service for the GOP (and for the state) if he gets people thinking about good, conservative ideas. I wish him luck, even though he’s unlikely to win the nomination.

Kopp for the win! He just won top line on the ballot, he can win the primary! He’s the right guy for Colorado!
