A Jefferson County Sheriff's deputy blocks the road on Lookout Mountain on Thursday, May 8, 2014.

JEFFERSON COUNTY, Colo. — The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office said Friday a woman whose body was found on a trail on Lookout Mountain was from out of state.

Investigators are not releasing the woman’s name pending notification of next of kin, but it’s not believed she has any known connections to the Denver metro area and it’s unclear why she was in the area.

The body was discovered Thursday morning along the Windy Saddle Hiking Trail. She was described as white with dark hair and between the ages of 20 and 40. She had no identification on her, and she was identified through fingerprints.

The case is being treated as a homicide and according to police radio communications, the person who reported finding the body is a retired police officer who said the woman had been stabbed.

Investigators believe she had been dead for 24 hours or less when the body was discovered.

The road closure on Lookout Mountain was lifted just before 11 a.m. Friday, but the parking lot at the Windy Saddle Trailhead is still closed.
