INDEPENDENCE PASS, Colo. –The Colorado Department of Transportation expects to have Independence Pass open on time by 2 p.m. May 22, the traditional Thursday before Memorial Day Weekend, the agency said Thursday.

CDOT aims to have the snowbound pass open by that date each year but it depends on the weather and whether crews can clear avalanche slide paths, move concrete barriers and hauling loads of rock debris from ditches as well as clear snow.

The pass provides one of the most scenic summer drives in the state on Colorado 82, between Twin Lakes (just south of Leadville) and Aspen.
