DENVER — Musician Michael Franti and his band Spearhead made an appearance at Denver Health Saturday afternoon.

Franti, who is known for his humanitarian efforts as well as his music, visited the pediatric ward at Denver Health Saturday to perform and practice yoga with the staff and young patients, according to Denver Health spokeswoman Joy Meadows.

Meadows said, “He made a fabulous impression on all with his positive and energetic performance.”

Franti’s appearance was also part of an effort to address obesity rates in Denver. In addition to performing and leading a yoga lesson, he spoke about healthy living.

Obesity rates in Denver have grown from 10 percent in 1990 to 20 percent in 2009, said Denver Health.

During the 2012-2013 school year, 31 percent of school-aged children in Denver were overweight or obese, which is consistent with the national average of 33 percent.
