LONGMONT, Colo. — Kurt Jones, a man allegedly involved in an assault that drew a SWAT response Wednesday morning, was arrested Thursday, Longmont police said.

Jones was found at his mother’s house in the 7500 block of Dale Court in Westminster.

Police said they were called to a home in the 2100 block of Meadow Court about midnight Wednesday on a report of an assault. A man told police he was walking home when he was attacked by a stranger who tried to strangle him.

The 48-year-old victim was taken to a local hospital for treatment of severe spine injuries. He was also nearly strangled according to police.

Around the same time, police responded to a report of a disturbance on the same block.

Officers came across a home with a broken window and a cell phone on the porch. Police asked for a search warrant for the house assuming it was connected to the earlier assault.

A SWAT team surrounded the home and police started negotiating with the resident.

However, police said when the attack victim was shown a photo of the resident in the home, the victim was unable to identify that person as the attacker. So, the standoff ended.

Later Wednesday, police obtained an arrest warrant for Kurt Jones, 30, in connection with what investigators call the “unprovoked attack.” Jones may suffer from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.

On Wednesday, FOX31 Denver’s Dave Young spoke to a man who identified himself as Kurt Jones after the SWAT team left. Young asked him why police surrounded his condo. “I don’t know. I’m an ex-marine and I live around here,” Jones said. “I don’t know,” he shrugged.

Police last saw Jones leaving the condo around 3:20 p.m. That was before they got the arrest warrant. He was driving a red Ford Mustang southbound on I-25 near Highway 119. The car has Colorado Disabled Veteran license plate 296-XAF.

Area schools and a senior living center were placed on a lockdown as a precaution, but those were lifted.
