Aurora police at the scene of a shooting at the Anschutz Medical Campus.

AURORA, Colo. — The University of Colorado Hospital employee who was shot and killed Wednesday night just outside the Anschutz Medical Campus in Aurora was identified Friday as Joseph Oliver Gorden, the Adams & Broomfield Counties Coroner’s Office announced.

The office said the manner and and cause of death is still under investigation.

The shooting happened at East 16th Avenue and North Quentin Street, just outside the hospital on the university’s medical campus, the hospital said.  It’s the first shooting that has happened since the campus opened.

A hospital spokesman said in a statement Thursday the man was an employee of the hospital.

Officers from the CU Denver Police Department responded to a report of a suicidal man in the parking garage at the hospital, the Aurora Police Department said.

After finding the man, he drove off. Officers followed and stopped him at 16th and Quentin. It was then that shots were fired, striking the man.

The man was taken to the emergency room at the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
