DENVER -- Jason Collins, the first openly gay athlete in pro basketball, is playing in Denver Thursday night, and the parents of Matthew Shepard will be on hand to watch.

Matthew Shephard’s parents Judy and Dennis are set to watch Collins’ Brooklyn Nets take on the Denver Nuggets, the Star Tribune reported. The couple are also scheduled to meet with Collins at some point in the evening.

"Obviously, it's extremely special, and I'm very much looking forward to meeting them," Collins told the paper. He declined to discuss any details of the meeting.

Matthew Shepard was a student at the University of Wyoming who was tortured and killed near Laramie in 1998. The attack was considered an anti-gay hate crime that spurred new laws around the country.

Collins has said he wears jersey number 98 in honor of Matthew Shepard.
