DENVER — Murder and child abuse charges were filed against a Denver man in the death of a 2-year-old, prosecutors said Friday.

Quinton Stanley faces one count each of first-degree murder and child abuse, said Denver DA spokeswoman Lynn Kimbrough.

Stanley was arrested Feb. 1 when officers were called to a home on Peoria Street near E. 38th Avenue around 1:40 a.m. on a report of a child not breathing.

The child was taken to a local hospital, and later died, police said.

“Stanley was caring for the child, who suffered multiple head injuries and died from drowning,” Kimbrough said in a news release.

The child was the son of Stanley’s girlfriend.

Stanley remains in custody in the Denver Detention Center where he is being held without bond. His next court appearance is Feb. 10.
