AURORA — The Colorado Department of Transportation will begin reconstructing a 2.5-mile segment of Interstate 70 between Tower Road and Colfax Avenue on Monday, likely increasing traffic problems in the area.

Beginning at 8 p.m. Monday, the left lane of I-70 eastbound from Tower Road to Colfax Road will be closed for approximately six months, CDOT said. It will take that stretch of eastbound I-70 down to one lane for the duration of the closure.

“This work is necessary to demolish and reconstruct the westbound bridge,” CDOT said.

The work aims to replace a bridge that is “at capacity.” Once the westbound portion of the bridge is demolished and replaced, the closure will be moved to the westbound lanes and the road will again be reduced from four lanes to two for the remainder of construction.

During this time, westbound traffic will be crossed over to the eastbound lanes, CDOT said.

Later, one lane of westbound traffic will be closed for an unknown period.

Speed limits in the area will be reduced from 70 miles per hour to 55 miles per hour throughout the project, CDOT said.
