THORNTON, Colo. — A Thornton mother was sentenced to five years probation with intensive supervision after her 4-year-old son drowned last summer.

Kayla Barnett‘s son, Izaiah Lopez, drowned in a swimming pool in June.

Police said Barnett left her son near the pool, even though he could not swim and did not have a life vest, and went outside the pool area to smoke a cigarette.

Deputy District Attorney Christa Landis said pleaded guilty to felony negligent child abuse resulting in death.

Landis said she believed the stipulated sentence to probation was an appropriate one. “Ultimately her worst punishment, I do not doubt, is the loss of her son,” Landis said.
