For years Facebook users have asked for an alternative way to quickly respond to a post when ‘liking’ would be insensitive or awkward.

According to a report by the Huffington Post, the social media giant has been experimenting with a potential solution.

During a Facebook hackathon — a chance for staffers to brainstorm new ideas — an engineer developed a ‘sympathize’ button.

Instead of “5 people ‘like’ this,” a Facebook posts might say “5 people sympathize with this.”

The idea was apparently well received internally, but there are no plans to make available on the site just yet.
