AURORA, Colo. — A suspected drunk driver caused a wreck involving an Aurora Police cruiser early Thursday morning, while officers were in the middle of performing a field sobriety test on another driver.

Police say the incident occurred near the intersection of Parker Road and Hamden Avenue around 2 a.m. According to a press release from Aurora Police, one driver had stopped his vehicle in the left lane with three police cruisers parked behind him.

While officers were trying to determine that driver’s intoxication level, another suspected drunk driver in a blue Audi struck one of the unoccupied police cruisers from the rear. The unoccupied car veered into oncoming traffic on Parker Road, and struck a red Mazda traveling the opposite direction.

Police say the driver of the Audi continued, and struck another unoccupied police cruiser as well, which left the Audi wedged between the second cruiser and a barrier in the median.

None of the officers who were outside their vehicles – nor the first suspected drunk driver – were injured in the wreck, and neither was the driver of the Mazda, according to police. The driver of the Audi reportedly had minor injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital.

Both suspected drunk drivers were placed under arrest.
