FOXBOROUGH, Mass. — What else did you expect?

A wild, erratic battle between the Denver Broncos and New England Patriots raged into overtime Sunday night. In the end, the Patriots prevailed on a freak mistake, 34-31.

After the Broncos took a commanding 24-0 lead against the hapless Patriots in the first half, the Patriots came storming back, scoring 21 unanswered points in the third quarter. From then on, the game was every bit the back-and-forth struggle everyone expected.

With just more than three minutes left in overtime, an incoming punt by the Patriots glanced off Broncos CB Tony Carter, and New England recovered the ball. Soon after, Patriots kicker Stephen Gostkowski kicked a 32-yard field goal to seal the deal by three points.

The loss slightly loosens the Broncos’ stranglehold on the AFC, dropping them to 9-2. They share that record with the Kansas City Chiefs.
