COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — An autopsy found that a 5-year-old boy whose body was recovered from a Colorado Springs apartment fire last week actually died of drowning, the El Paso County Coroner’s Office reported.

The case is being investigated as a homicide.

The victim’s mother, 42-year-old Shannon Dodson, has been arrested on  suspicion of first-degree murder.

The child has been identified as Jude Marray-Gomez. Public records show the child’s father, Jude Thaddeus Gomez, petitioned for custody in January, the Denver Post reported. A hearing was scheduled for Nov. 15.

The fire occurred Friday at the Hill Park Apartments on Murrary Boulevard near Pikes Peak Avenue.

According to Colorado Springs police, this is the 29th homicide of 2013.
